How did you hear about Soul?

I was interested in volunteering to do a Christmas lunch one year and googled, Soul Café was the first organisation that came up. They were only doing takeaway service but offered me a volunteer shift commencing in January 2014 at Soul Café Mayfield. I then moved into Soul Café Newcastle when the Mayfield service closed.

How long have you been here?

I have been volunteering with Soul now for 8 wonderful years.

What do you do?

I do the Sunday lunch shift with an amazing group of volunteers on the “A” team!

What do you love about Soul?

I love that Soul offer support services beyond the meal. They don’t just feed and forget they try to engage with guests and support them through recovery, finding housing and mental health support. We also have great community partnerships that provide fee haircuts, GP service, Mental Health Service and many local businesses that donate food to Soul . It really is “more than just a meal”!

I feel a real connection to our guests and love how committed Soul are to helping them. I love treating the guests with dignity and respect irrelevant of their circumstances.

How did you end up being a team Leader?

To be completely honest I don’t know, I was just asked if I would like to lead the Sunday crew having volunteered for some time with Soul. I was happy to give it a go. The Sunday crew all work together to give our guests a great meal and good environment, they make my role as Team Leader easy.

And anything you would like to share?

I feel a real connection to our guests and love how committed Soul are to helping them. I love treating the guests with dignity and respect irrelevant of their circumstances. Soul gives them a safe supportive place to attend. Soul is always trying to help them to find themselves again through recovery and supporting them to become better versions of themselves. It is hopeful that through this sense of belonging they may find hope and a purpose to gain their life back. During my time at Soul, I have witnessed some great guest recoveries and applaud them for turning the corner in their life.

Meet our volunteers

Our wonderful family of volunteers make Soul Café what it is. They bring the heart, the fun, the compassion, the skills, and experience and each and every one makes a difference to the lives of our guests.
